Welcome!

The purpose of this course is two-fold. First, the course is designed to raise your awareness of various teaching practices such as methods, strategies and techniques that you can use as a language teacher. Secondly, the course is desigend to help you practices these skills. Skill development, however, requires reflection and so through out this course you will reflect upon your own teaching style and the teaching style of others. As you encounter, practice, and reflect upon these methods of language teaching, you will expand and hone your repertoire of teaching techniques and thus become a more effective teacher.

Required Books:
Techniques and Principles Third Edition (TP3) in the video (TPLT)
Supplementary Books:

Homework Questions on Reading and Lectures

To make sure that you are doing the reading and watching the video, I have weekly homework assignments that you need to submit via email or put in my mail box on the 7th floor of the main building. Over the course of the semester there are 9 homework assignements. I have provided links to the homework questions (below).

The production team who made the Week 9 video on WLA and CBI forgot to add a sample lesson video of Language Across the Curriculum (LAC). I am adding a link to that video here.

Project 1: Poster Presentation

Each student will choose a method that we have studied. You will design a poster that will help you answer the following questions: What is significant about the method? (Describe the goal, key principles & techniques) Why did you pick it? How will you use it in your future teaching? (Describe and activity or specific technique that you will use). The presentation is only 3 minutes long, so you need to choose the most important points to present. You will give the same presentation 3 times. Once to your group members, then again to the members of the other two groups. Sample posters are in the links below.

Project 2: Lesson Plan & Micro-Teaching

You will create a lesson plan using various methods, techniques and activities that we have studies to create an effective teaching plan. The idea here is that you can use any of the methods we have studied. And you should use them creatively and effectively to create fun and effective lesson. You will also need to identify the method that your procedures describe and the principle behind the procedure. You will then teach the lesson plan to a group of your classmates. (handout) - (Micro-Teaching Lesson Plan Template)

Reflection on Micro-Teaching

Use the feedback that you received from your peers and from your trainer to help you reflect on your Micro-Teaching experience. Answer the three question on the back of the Lesson Plan and Micro-Teaching handout. Email me the refection or put it in my box on the 7th floor of the main building. The reflection is due week 15. (RMT - template)

Final Learning Statement

This is a re-write of your Belief Statement (handout). Your job is to evaluate your original answers, think about the feedback I gave on the original paper and provide better answers and reasons for your beliefs. You will need to turn in the orignail Belief Statement (with my feedback on it) with the Final Learning Statement; BOTH TOGETHER. This is due week 16.
